Newport Beach Dermatologists Reduce Wrinkles With Collagen Made From Patients' Cells
Published: 06/19/12 08:05 AM EDT

NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/19/12 -- Silverberg Surgical and Medical Group is announcing the recent addition of an innovative approach to wrinkle reduction. LAVIV is the first and only personalized cell therapy designed to improve the appearance of wrinkles by capitalizing on the natural benefits of a patient's own collagen. Recently FDA approved, only a handful of board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons, including Dr. Nancy Silverberg, have completed the comprehensive training required by LAVIV manufacturer Fibrocell Science, Inc. Additionally, Dr. Silverberg is one of few physicians certified to train other physicians to perform the LAVIV technique.

At her Newport Beach dermatology practice, Dr. Silverberg says many patients are concerned about the appearance of wrinkles and aging skin. Additionally, she says her patients express concern over the safety and effectiveness over the growing number of skincare products and services available. However, when discussing the LAVIV process with her patients, Dr. Silverberg says the fact that the injections are created from the patient's own collagen producing cells eases some of this concern.

The Newport Beach dermatologist says collagen helps give skin its tone, structure, and overall quality. However, as people age, she says collagen production decreases and the cells break down, resulting in wrinkles and a loss of skin tone. LAVIV uses a patented technology to extract a patient's fibroblast cells, which are responsible for producing collagen. The cells gathered from a small skin sample are then returned to the lab and multiplied, resulting in the formation of new fibroblast cells, which are then injected into the smile lines of the patient. In addition to the FDA approved method for correcting smile lines, Dr. Silverberg also notes that they use LAVIV to treat other lines such as scars, as well as sun-damaged skin, both of which are treatments currently being studied by the FDA.

Dr. Silverberg says the recommended treatment plan for LAVIV is a series of three treatments, typically three to six weeks apart. Because each injection is developed from a patient's own cells, she says there is less chance for an allergic reaction. Dr. Silverberg adds that the wrinkle treatment is an exciting development in the dermatologic industry, and speaks to the commitment her and her colleagues have made in the pursuit of improving patient safety and satisfaction.
