Bales College is open to all students, regardless of background. The college is divided into two age groups. Younger students attend Lower School while older students attend the Sixth Form College and Independent School.

Most students at Bales start out in Lower School during Year 7. Students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 are welcome to transfer to Bales and get started as well, if there are openings. Other students may start out at Bales in Year 12 at the Sixth Form College and Independent School. In order to qualify, students must meet all exam entrance requirements. Students who get started in Year 12 will complete their AS level examinations after the end of their first year and their GCE Advanced Level exams at the end of the second year. Sometimes students enroll at Bales for a year in order to work up their A-Level grades; this can allow them to be more competitive for college admissions boards and get into the university of their choice.

While there are fees for attending Bales, the school does offer scholarships each year for junior school admissions. These scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated academic success. A meeting between the parents and student and the Principal of Bales may also be involved in granting a scholarship, as well as an examination. Busaries are available as well.

Students may attend Bales on a day basis only, or they may take advantage of the school's boarding accommodations. Some families choose full boarding while others choose weekly boarding (the student stays at Bales during the week and goes home for the weekends). Boys and girls may live together in the Old Vicarage Boarding House or girls may opt to stay in the girls-only East Cottage Boarding House. Meals are provided seven days a week and student kitchens are available for snacking. Bales offers two sports sessions a week so that students can lead active and athletic lives.
