Cars Are The Next Playground For App Developers
This year's CES may have been about startups more than ever before, but over the last few years, the car industry has also increased its presence at the show. In previous years, we heard a lot about the connected car, but until now, those cars remained virtually closed for developers. In one fell swoop, that changed this year, as Ford and GM announced concrete programs with SDKs and APIs that are either already open for developers or will be available within the next few months.

Ford Launches Its OpenXC SDK And Hardware Specs To Let Developers Access Its Cars’ Sensors And Metrics
Our cars today feature lots of sensors, but it's not easy for developers and hardware hackers to get access to all of this data, which is typically proprietary and manufacturer specific. Last year, Ford, in collaboration with Bug Labs, announced its OpenXC program to allow developers to access metrics from its car's internal network and today, it is opening up the program and launching an SDK so anybody who is interested in this project can start building.

Ford And Jimmy Fallon Turn To Twitter For Help Writing Lincoln Super Bowl Ad
Ford is launching a big marketing campaign to revive its Lincoln brand, and apparently Twitter will play a big role in those efforts, according to a story in Bloomberg.
The automaker has hired Jimmy Fallon to write Lincoln's first-ever Super Bowl ad, which will be based on tweets. Neither Bloomberg nor the #SteerTheScript website offers many details about how Fallon plans to turn a bunch of tweets into a 60-second TV commercial — the website says, "The writing process will begin with a tweet from Jimmy and then after that it's up to you, and Jimmy, where the story goes."

SYNC, Ford's in-car connectivity system, is powered by Microsoft's embedded platform and launched about five years ago. While it had its ups and downs, Ford is quite committed to the platform and plans to open it up to more developers over time. Looking ahead, the two companies also plan to expand their collaboration by fusing cloud computing and the car's sensor data.

Ford CTO Paul Mascarenas On The Car Of The Future: Green, Automated, Maybe Not Even A Car
Some of the speakers at today's Techonomy Detroit conference talked about how entrepreneurship and technology can help Detroit diversify its economy beyond automobile manufacturing. But that doesn't mean we have to give up on the car companies.
Ford, for example, seems to be in the middle of a reinvention. At the conference, I had a chance to interview Paul Mascarenas, the company's CTO and vice president of research and innovation, about Ford's vision for the car of the future — a vision includes some pretty dramatic changes.
