The 2012 NC East Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar will take place June 14-17 in Raleigh, NC at North Carolina State University. The seminar gives 150 high school sophomores an opportunity to interact with leaders in business, education, media, government, and volunteerism over the three-day seminar.
"We are very excited to work with so many outstanding young leaders this weekend from across eastern North Carolina as they learn how to develop their leadership skills and become an active member of their local community," said Stacy Hanna, 2012 HOBY NC East Leadership Seminar.
Students will have a chance to meet other young leaders from around the state and discuss many important topics that affect them. The state seminar is planned entirely by local volunteers who believe in students' ability to make a difference, including local adults who have been HOBY volunteers for over ten years.
HOBY helps students develop their leadership potential so that they can go back to their schools and communities to make a lasting, positive impact. HOBY is an international program with seminars in all 50 states and in many countries around the world. Students who attend HOBY seminars have the exclusive opportunity to become part of the HOBY alumni association, which gives them lifelong access to leadership opportunities, including increased eligibility for scholarships and internships. HOBY Ambassadors are asked to complete 100 hours of community service in the year following their leadership seminar experience.
For 25 years, HOBY NC East has been sponsored and managed by the Raleigh Jaycees, an organization focused on leadership through community service. The chapter provides volunteers who work throughout the year to develop the HOBY Leadership Seminar. They are supported by over 60 volunteers from Jaycees chapters, local organizations, and HOBY Alumni from all over the nation the weekend of the seminar. Media is invited to attend HOBY NC East on Saturday June 16, 2012 from 9 am to 12 pm at the Central & Eastern North Carolina Food Bank where HOBY ambassadors will be helping out and learning about getting involved in community projects.
